Illustration of Roman domestic vessels from the book "History of Costumes of Peoples Throughout the Centuries" by Paolo Lorenzini, Nerbini Publishing House, Florence, 1934. The first is a large vomitorium vessel, the second is a food warmer containing burning embers, and the third, called an escara, was used to carry the roast on live coals so it could finish browning under the noses of the guests.
