Illustration of Roman standards from the book "History of Costumes of Peoples Throughout the Centuries" by Paolo Lorenzini, Nerbini Publishing House, Florence, 1934. The standards distinguished the various legions and featured different symbols. The standard of Concord had a hand as its symbol, the cavalry had small square flags of blue color, and the imperial standard was the one with the eagle.
