Illustration of a Roman bed in the palace of Scaurus in Rome, from the book "History of Costumes of Peoples Throughout the Centuries" by Paolo Lorenzini, Nerbini Publishing House, Florence, 1934. The niches were made of bronze, cedar wood or oriental sandalwood, and were inlaid with mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell and gold. The mattresses were filled with Gallic wool and the pillows were made of feathers.

Le nicchie erano di bronzo, di legno di cedro o di sandalo orientale, ed erano intarsiate di madreperla, tartaruga e oro. I materassi erano colmi di lana delle Gallie e i guanciali erano di piuma.
